GREETINGS, FRIENDS AND READERS! Thank you for your support

be so much fun. I hope you enjoy my latest Newsletter, and I hope
you're having a great summer, too.
Best regards and warmest wishes to one and all, Joe.

JOE BUFF "RE-ENLISTS" WITH HIS PUBLISHER FOR AT LEAST TWO MORE!
Joe is pleased to report that he has just signed a contract with his
publisher, Wm. Morrow/HarperCollins, for two more hardcover novels.
The first of these is the main writing project Joe is working on now,
for delivery of the draft manuscript to his editor, Mike Shohl, on
December 1 of this year.
Yes, this will be another Captain Jeffrey Fuller adventure, which
based on the official Outline as approved by Mike Shohl
promises to be the most engrossing and hair-raising of
USS CHALLENGER's combat missions yet!
(A big "Thank YOU" also goes to Joe's literary agent,
John Talbot, a fabulous person to work with, and an important part
of Joe's career-writing team.)
The title of this book, which is public information already
IF you know where to look on certain publishing websites, is:
STRAITS OF WAR, which will be out in hardcover in the autumn of 2004.
UPDATE ON JOE'S NEXT BOOKS' PUBLICATION DATES --
FYI, the paperback edition of CRUSH DEPTH, the third Jeffrey Fuller
story, will be in bookstores everywhere on October 28, 2003,
coordinated with the release of the fourth Jeffrey Fuller story,
TIDAL RIP, in hardcover on November 11, 2003.
COME JOIN JOE'S "SUB PEN" VIRTUAL TALK AND CALL-IN SHOW! --
The Sub Pen meets most Tuesdays, from 9pm to midnight. (See the
top of the Home Page of Joe's website for the latest schedule and
the link into the Sub Pen, which is inactive when Joe isn't "on.")
The next meeting is August 5, and then August 19. The discussions
have been wide-ranging, lively, and loads of fun. Since some of you
who came to previous gatherings in Joe's Sub Pen asked about
transcripts of the sessions, Joe and his webmaster, Bill Parker of
Parker Information Resources (Houston, TX) plan to upgrade the
software before Joe's next books come out this autumn. Those next
books will the the first ones to have Joe's website URL on their
covers, so the crowd is likely to increase substantially. One
feature of the upgraded software will allow smaller side-rooms,
so we won't have dozens of people all trying to talk at once.
And transcripts WILL be available, posted to Joe's website.
Bill Parker and I aim to please!

AND NOW, FOR SOME OF JOE'S RECENT PROFESSIONAL NON-FICTION WORK --
AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:
"New Age Nukes, Part I" (This themed miniseries has four parts
in total, all visible in my website Nonfiction Archives.)
How did things ever go so wrong so quickly?
At the end of the Cold War, America's Strategic
Air Command was disbanded, and the Former
Soviet Union promised not to target their ICBMs at
United States soil anymore. The whole world
breathed a big sigh of relief: We wouldn't go up in
a holocaust of H-bomb fireballs after all.
Post-apocalypse movies could stay in the realm of
entertainment or doomsday warning parable where
they belonged, and not become factual prophesy.

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:
"Energy and Insecurity"
The topical question of energy sufficiency splits the
world into Haves and Have-Nots. Looking at this
pragmatically, America falls somewhere in
between: Though we possess untapped reserves
ourselves, without constant imports of oil and
natural gas from other countries our economy and
our way of life would collapse.

AN ARTICLE, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN THE SUBMARINE REVIEW:
"ASDS, SSGN, and WIAs"
Two technological developments, well known in the
submariner community and both of them significant
force multipliers, are together revolutionizing Navy
capabilities to project power onto land. The
modification of several Ohio-class SSBNs into an
SSGN configuration presents a new order of
mission-flexible, forward deployed, and stealthy
land-attack cruise missile launch platforms
blended with Special Warfare commando transport.
The Advanced SEAL Delivery System minisub (ASDS)
enhances that forward deployed transport and staging
even further, by being able to enter the littorals as
a very low signature vehicle. Because of its small size,
the ASDS can penetrate shallow waters and yet serve as an
undersea base of operations for a SEAL team or other combat
swimmers, with an autonomous endurance of several days.
Each new SSGN is projected to be able to carry two ASDSs
as dorsal loads, plus a complement of as many as 66 Special
Warfare personnel (close to twice that in an emergency).

ABOUT JOE BUFF'S RECENT READERMAIL --
I've gotten so many e-mails from you all that it's a daunting task
to pick specific ones to include in this Newsletter! So I decided not
to spend the hours it would take to sort through my archived in-box,
but instead thank each of you who corresponded with me, here.
Some of you have become regular "e-pals" of mine, and I greatly value
your friendship and support! I've decided, for this summer, to do
what I think you'd all rather I do, which is invest those work hours
instead in drafting STRAITS OF WAR. Please keep your e-mails coming,
with questions, feedback, and anything else relevant that you'd like
to discuss. I really do answer every message. Thanks again!!!
