GREETINGS, FRIENDS AND READERS! I hope you each enjoyed the 2004 holiday season and had a good winter. This issue of my e-Newsletter will bring you up to date on the upcoming releases of the STRAITS OF POWER paperback and the SEAS OF CRISIS hardcover; it will also, as in previous issues, provide what I hope you find to be useful and interesting items on naval affairs, national defense, and homeland security. I want to thank all of you personally for your feedback and support, which helped the recent paperback edition of TIDAL RIP hit the Barnes & Noble nationwide bookstore-chain's bestseller list for several weeks, and put the STRAITS OF POWER hardcover into Amazon's Top 10 Men's Adventure Fiction bestseller list for weeks on end too!

A reminder: If your e-mail address changes, please remember to inform me via a new ADD ME submission thru my website, or by an e-mail directly to readermail@joebuff.com. Thanks!

Best regards, much obliged, and warmest wishes to all, --Joe.

JOE BUFF DELIVERS "SEAS OF CRISIS" MANUSCRIPT TO HIS PUBLISHER

Joe just delivered the draft manuscript of his latest, sixth Captain Jeffrey Fuller adventure, titled SEAS OF CRISIS, to his editor Mike Shohl at Wm. Morrow/HarperCollins. The formal editing process now begins! SEAS OF CRISIS is scheduled for hardcover release on November 29, 2005. (The paperback will come out in autumn, 2006.) A first cut of the cover art for SEAS OF CRISIS has already been developed after consultation with Morrow's Art Director, Rich Aquan, and the result is stunning and beautiful. The plot of SEAS OF CRISIS is embargoed by Joe's publisher for a while, but this story takes Jeffrey to a more senior command level than ever amid deadly international intrigue and high-stakes diplomacy, with his most harrowing front-line submarine combat yet. Jeffrey works with a different cast of Special Operations Forces commandos this time, whose land mission is perhaps the most frightening and critical one yet in the entire novel series. Other important new characters (and submarines and weapons) are introduced as well. The war takes some very dramatic twists and turns -- with major geopolitical realignments that suggest the whole nature of the global conflict will morph in compelling and exciting (and scary) new directions! Joe is now beginning to outline the next book, #7, which will be his main work project going into 2006 and which would be published in hardcover in late 2006.

JOE BUFF'S "STRAITS OF POWER" PAPERBACK DUE OUT AUGUST 30, 2005

Joe is very pleased to announce that the paperback edition of his most recent hardcover, STRAITS OF POWER, will be available to readers everywhere starting on August 30, 2005. (The actual date on the shelves of individual stores may vary slightly from this.) The STRAITS OF POWER paperback will include at the back a "teaser chapter" from the beginning of Joe's next hardcover, SEAS OF CRISIS, which is scheduled for release on November 29, 2005. Joe's publisher, Morrow/Harper, is following their successful approach from Joe's previous book, TIDAL RIP, and the artwork on the cover of the STRAITS paperback is the same as on the hardback -- so those of you who saw the hardcover on display in stores or on-line a few months ago will be able to spot it immediately when it comes in!

JOE'S "CRUSH DEPTH" POLISH EDITION COVER DEPICTS FULLER AND BELL!

Joe is pleased to report that the Polish-language edition of CRUSH DEPTH is now on sale, published in Poland by Bellona Press.

All fans of the Jeffrey Fuller series will probably enjoy seeing the cover art of this Polish edition, given the unusual and (to Joe at least, delightful) approach taken by Bellona's design department.

The world's first artistic impression of Joe's main characters has appeared!

http://www.joebuff.com/53339.jpg

Yes, that's Jeffrey Fuller with the coffee mug, and his loyal XO, Jackson Bell, at the (somewhat inaccurate) old-fashioned periscope. Jeffrey, ever the happy warrior, sure does look like he just spent a week on 2 hours sleep and 20 gallons of coffee -- so typical of him in battle! And Bell, African-American and third-generation U.S. Navy, looks competent and dedicated -- perhaps he'll get his own command some day soon? Joe is keeping a hard copy of the cover art near his laptop for inspiration. After having these two guys be so alive in his head and in printed words for over six years now, it's quite an amazing experience for the author to see an artist's rendition of the characters as "real" people.

FEW REAL-WORLD NATIONS ARE EVER "FRIENDS"...

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:

"The Undiscovered Country"

“I never saw it coming” is a frequent lament among people who’ve been caught by surprise in a car crash. The corporate management buzzword for the same sort of ruined day, when a business calamity approaches and then clobbers its unseeing victim, is called being “blindsided.” Nations get blindsided too. For national populations, the ultimate calamity is having to cope with an unexpected aggressor’s act of war. December 7, 1941, and September 11, 2001 are two cases in point of how recognizing precursor red-flags for what they are, and preparing to deflect or absorb the impending hard impact, can defy the best minds and best gadgetry in each U.S. generation.

SUBS AND SPIES IN THE COLD WAR VICTORY...

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:

"Cold War Irony"

Another Veterans’ Day has just gone by, and right before it -- November 9th -- marked fifteen years since the de facto end of the Cold War, when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. To the extent that the Cold War was indeed truly a war, it was by decades America’s longest war, and also by far the most dangerous. The men and women in uniform who served in, or directly supported in different ways, our thermonuclear deterrent triad of B-52 and B-1 bombers, ICBM silos, and SSBN “boomer” subs, form one of our largest groups of veterans, living or dead. Through year after year of training, drills, and perpetual on-watch vigilance, they helped achieve our country’s greatest victory, the defeat of the Soviet Union, without ever firing a shot. They deserve special recognition as much as do our blooded conventional forces who battled the USSR by proxy in Korea, Vietnam, and elsewhere, or who manned the front lines in tense long-term stand-offs ranging from Southeast Asia to Central Europe and beyond -- on land, in the air, and on or under the sea. Cold Warriors did their duty unflinchingly in some of the loneliest places, and the harshest environments, that human beings have ever had to face. From the North Pole to Antarctica, from the crushing depths of world oceans to the final wilderness of outer space, brave men and women engaged and entangled an enemy who sometimes stared at them eyeball to eyeball, and sometimes never even knew they were there.

THE COST OF FREEDOM IS MEASURED IN BLOOD...

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:

"Why Do We Do It?"

This is supposed to be the time of year when people across America celebrate “peace on Earth and good will toward men,” a concept that ought to transcend any particular religious beliefs -- even atheism. Yet looking around at the state of the world, I’m sure I’m not alone in finding it hard to keep in the spirit of the season. The holidays must be a particularly difficult time for all those who lost loved ones and friends on 9/11/01 or during military operations and raging insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq and elsewhere. Plus, don’t forget the troops who were wounded or maimed, and the permanent price to both them and their families. December, 2004 could well set a new record for “the year-end blahs,” regardless of which presidential candidate you were rooting for, and whatever your personal opinion on current U.S. involvement in overseas combat.

NEW GERMAN BOOK ON NAZI NUKES -- FACT OR HYPE?...

A LENGTHY QUOTE, ORIGINALLY POSTED ON MILITARY.COM'S DEFENSETECH BLOG

"Adolf's A-Bomb"

"German historian Rainer Karlsch says in a new book, Hitler’s Bomb, that the Nazis successfully tested tactical nukes. While I haven’t seen his book and I don’t speak German, I’m frankly very skeptical," says Military.com analyst Joe Buff.
