JOE BUFF QUOTED ON WAR CODE-NAMES IN MAJOR MILWAUKEE NEWSPAPER --

Joe was quoted this past weekend in a feature article by reporter James H. Burnett III of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. The article "Branding Also Key in War Effort" has the subtitle "Names with positive image help military in public relations battle." Joe is quoted extensively in the last section of the article, "Code Names," about the atomic bomb project in WWII and about operational naming in Gulf War I.

JOE BUFF INVITED BY PRESIDENT/CEO TO WRITE REGULAR COLUMN FOR WEBSITE MILITARY.COM, PREMIER INFO RESOURCE FOR MILITARY COMMUNITY --

Joe Buff is proud to have been asked to contribute to this major website, with his opinion and analysis pieces alongside respected defense and policy writers such as David Hackworth and Oliver North.

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:

"Why They Ain't Like Us"

No, I don't mean Al Qaeda, or Saddam Hussein, or North Korea. I mean France, Russia, and Germany. And I don't mean Why they don't like us, though that's part of it. I mean Why they aren't like us, since the latter helps lead to the former....

AN ESSAY, ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED ON MILITARY.COM:

"Toward Nano-Fish-Bots?"

The concept of swarms of nano-robots populating the oceans is beginning to seem no longer just a science fiction fantasy. The thought has been bandied about that these "nano-fish-bots" could detect and report on the whereabouts of submarines everywhere, both friendly and enemy, possibly fomenting world disarmament. But America's subs are important deterrent, intelligence, and land-attack platforms, now and in any future time of national crisis. Would such a global anti-submarine patrol force, perhaps under U.N. auspices, be a good thing? Could tiny undersea vehicles render full-sized nuclear submarines obsolete?

JOE BUFF'S SELECTED READERMAIL --

Joe:

Just read your latest article on Military.com. Amen, brother! The self-serving political and economic motivations of nations are often hidden from public view behind various masks of loudly proclaimed moral righteousness. I like the way you expose the "rest of the story" to borrow a phrase from the great Paul Harvey. Our own politicians are not immune from these things either, yet our freedom of speech helps to expose such things wherever they may reside...

JOE BUFF'S NON-FICTION "BOOK PICKS" OF THE MONTH -- (Great ones I've read myself lately, that influenced my thinking) --

VICTORY ON THE POTOMAC by James R. Locher III, Texas A&M Press.

A first-person account by someone who was there of the long political battle to create the Goldwater-Nichols Act in the 1980s, which modernized the organization of the Pentagon and how it interacts with Congress and the White House. Fascinating, well-written, and very eye-opening book!

MAKING WAR, THINKING HISTORY by Jeffrey Record, Naval Institute Press.

A study of how American presidents use analogies from past wars to help them make decisions during their time in office. Appeasement, or quagmire? The answers are never so simple. Very relevant and thought-provoking in the context of Operation Iraqi Freedom!
