JOE BUFF BECOMES MEMBER OF SUBMARINE INDUSTRIAL BASE COUNCIL (SIBC)

Joe, as President of Joe Buff Inc., is pleased to report that he was invited, and accepted the invitation, to become a member of the Submarine Industrial Base Council (SIBC), a defense industry trade association located in Washington, DC. The SIBC has over 4,000 member companies, located in all 50 states, involved in building, maintaining, and supplying America's nuclear submarine fleet. The SIBC seeks to educate the general public, and national leaders and legislators, on the importance of a robust U.S. Navy nuclear submarine fleet to U.S. national security and world peace. Joe plans to attend the SIBC's next annual "Supplier Days" conference, in DC, to be held on March 3 and 4, 2010. JOE & SHEILA BUFF HELP OUT AT 2009 DOLPHIN SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT FUND RAISER

[Joe Buff / JoeBuff.Com] Sheila [left edge of pic] and I receive a plaque from Mimi Donnelly, Chairman of the Board of the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, for sponsoring the drinks cart at their 2009 Golf Tournament Fund Raiser in Suffolk, VA. Randi Klein, Executive Director of DSF, holds the microphone.
The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation held their 2009 Golf Tournament Fund Raiser on Friday, 2 October, at the Riverfront Golf Club in Suffolk, Virginia. The weather was great, a terrific time was had by the 140ish Greater Submarine Community golfers who played, and the total funds raised from corporate sponsors set a new record, at substantially more than last year's proceeds. Like last year, Joe Buff Inc. sponsored the tournament's drinks cart, but unlike last year's event at the Heron Ridge Golf Club in Virginia Beach, this year club policy didn't let Joe & Sheila drive the cart to serve players. Instead, they were among the Observers for the Hole-in-One contest at the club's 2nd hole. Nobody got a hole in 1, but if they had the prize for the first to do so would have been a free trip to St. Andrews in Scotland! (The DSF arranges with a commercial insurer to take on the risk of having a winner, in return for an insurance premium.) Players ranged from junior enlisted submariners to active duty admirals and several retired submariners, plus several major defense contractor executives, spouses, DSF office staffers, etc. A family-oriented affair, a number of attendees brought their children. The event began with a nice continental breakfast at the club house, and ended back there with a bbq buffet luncheon/social in the afternoon. Vice Admiral Jay Donnelly, Commander, U.S. Submarine Force, gave some welcoming remarks, as did Mimi Donnelly, Chairman of the Board of the DSF, and Randi Klein, Executive Director of the DSF. Awards were given for best and worst players, and plaques were given to the various sponsors. Joe and Sheila announced that they would sponsor the drinks cart at the 2010 Tournament. Mimi Donnelly is now Chairman of the Board of the DSF.

JOE BUFF INC. TO BE A (SMALL) CORPORATE SPONSOR AT 2009 DOLPHIN SCHOLARSHIP GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Dolphin Scholarship Foundation was established in 1960 to help out the children of U.S. Submarine Force families with the ever-rising costs of a college education. Right now, 137 Dolphin Scholars are each receiving scholarships of $3,400 per year for up to four years of undergraduate study -- since inception the DSF has awarded over $7 million to 1,000+ different students. All contributions to the DSF are tax deductible. Visitors to JoeBuff.com are encouraged to make a donation (of any amount, no matter how large or small) to the DSF's endowment, to support their continuing good work for the kin of our nation's Silent Service warriors!

During spring, 2007, Joe and Sheila Buff made a major planned-giving bequest to the DSF. (See the Summer, 2007 "DSForum", top of page 3.) Now, as president of Joe Buff Inc., a subchapter S corporation domiciled in the State of New York, Joe has for the second year arranged to sponsor a Drinks Cart at the 2009 annual Dolphin Scholarship Foundation Corporate Golf Tournament fund raiser, which will be on Friday, 2 October 2009 in Suffolk, VA at the Riverfront Golf Club. Joe and his wife Sheila will help serve refreshments to about 150 submariners of all ranks, active duty and retired, who will play in the tournament. The event includes breakfast, and a bar-b-que awards lunch social afterward. Last year's was tons of fun and this year's promises to be, too!

JOE BUFF NOW HAS 4,300+ FACEBOOK FRIENDS -- JOIN US TO STAY IN BETTER TOUCH!

Joe is delighted that since April 6, 2009, when he first created his current profile on Facebook, he has gained 4,330 friends as of this morning. Many of Joe's Facebook friends are military folks (both active duty and veterans and their families), civilian military supporters and enthusiasts, as well as other writers, people in publishing and media, and avid readers in general.

Joe suggests that you, too, "friend" him on Facebook, or if you aren't already on Facebook yourself then you ought to sign up! You can see part of Joe's extensive profile by clicking on his Facebook Badge in the upper left corner of the Home Page here on JoeBuff.com. Joe's Links provide his personal daily news items and photo picks, with one-line zingers of his own commentary. These are only visible to people who are on Facebook and have friended Joe -- so sign up now! His Profile information goes into more detail on the personal side of Joe's life than the information on this JoeBuff.com website. Joe enjoys posting humorous (and supportive) comments on the status update news flow of his Facebook friends. He also uses some of his own status updates to "reveal" wacky puns and odd-ball wordplay.

Facebook has a limit of no more than 5,000 friends to any one person's account profile. After that limit is reached, an unlimited number of people can become "Fans" of someone's "Public Profile" which is attached as an adjunct to their Personal Profile Account. Joe plans to soon begin working on building such a Public Profile for himself as an author and movie producer, which anyone can then "Fan" from their own Facebook account.

Joe Buff has finally updated the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page of JoeBuff.com, to give readers more info on key events since the completion of SEAS OF CRISIS at the end of 2005. (In the interim, Joe was responding individually to the many readermails asking about his next book, etc.)

  • When does SEAS OF CRISIS come out in hardcover? In paperback? The next book?
  • How much longer do you plan to continue the Jeffrey Fuller series?
  • Joe also now answers two new, additional questions:

  • Why is your next book delayed so long after SEAS OF CRISIS?
  • Might one of your novels be made into a movie?
  • Joe invites all site visitors to click on "FAQ" among the navigation buttons on the top left of each Web site page, to see the answers to these questions and more!

JOE BUFF HAS NICE INTERVIEW ON "SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN - ONLINE EDITION."

Joe is pleased to report that he was interviewed by Laura Vanderkam, writing for SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, for an article in their "Where Are They Now?" monthly series about the future lives and exploits of selected winners of the Westinghouse Science Talent Search (STS) scholarship contest for high school seniors. (Sponsorship of the STS was in recent years taken over by Intel Corp.) Joe was awarded one of the three third prizes in 1970, for his paper about some original pure math research. The scholarship, of $1,500 per year for four years, paid a substantial portion of the tuition at the college Joe chose to attend, New York University (NYU), with its prestigious Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences where Joe took many graduate courses for credit as an undergraduate. College was a lot less expensive forty years ago!

The interview, "Joe Buff: A Lifelong Interest in the Navy Comes Full Circle" -- which helps make some sense in retrospective out of the changing trends in Joe's professional life -- can be seen at http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=joe-buff-westinghouse-navy

JOE BUFF NOW HAS AN ACCOUNT ON TWITTER!

Joe Buff recently joined Twitter.com, with the screen name "JoeBuffSubs." Joe invites you to "follow" him there and he will gladly reciprocate. (Twitter is an increasingly popular social networking site that focuses on members mini-blogging by sending around status updates no more than 140 characters long. It's amazing how much -- or little, if you prefer -- you can say in one "tweet"!)

Joe has also set up his Twitter as a Facebook "app" (application), so that when he updates his Twitter status it will also automatically update his Facebook status with the same text. (You can tell by seeing "via Twitter" next to the update on Joe's Facebook profile page.) Joe sometimes will twitter from his cell phone while out doing things or traveling. Joe has also downloaded Tweekdeck from tweekdeck.com, a free application which gives a much nicer spreadsheet-like display of the flow of status updates from both Twitter and Facebook side by side. You can see Joe's latest few tweets on the Twitter badge near the top of the JoeBuff.com Home page, under the Facebook badge.

JOE BUFF CELEBRATES EXACT 12TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS WRITING CAREER

Joe Buff is joyously marking today as the exact 12th anniversary of the real start of his professional full-time writing career. On Friday, April 11, 1997, a dark day in the investment markets (but nothing like these days), Joe's boss at Merrill Lynch suggested he update his resume. "From now on they won't be called resumes," Joe ejaculated gleefully to himself, smiling inside happily in a celebratory manner, "from now on they're called book proposals and article submissions." Joe can honestly say that since leaving Wall Street 12 years ago he has never looked back. He got his literary agent, John Talbot of the Talbot Fortune Literary Agency, in spring 1998 based on an unmarketable but very well written science fiction novel and his first non-fiction article sold to THE SUBMARINE REVIEW. John got Joe his first sale, of the DEEP SOUND CHANNEL manuscript, in spring 1999 -- that sale made the "Hot Deals" section of PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, where Joe was compared to a budding Tom Clancy.

JOE BUFF HAS HIS 3RD NATIONAL DEFENSE OP-ED IN "THE DAY" OF NEW LONDON

For the third time in less than 2 years, Joe Buff has had an op-ed article about undersea warfare published in THE DAY of New London, www.theday.com. THE DAY is a daily newspaper serving southeast Connecticut and Rhode Island, and because of its excellent coverage of the Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE NLON) in Groton and the General Dynamics Electric Boat submarine shipyard nearby, it gets national and international attention for its reporting and analysis about the U.S. Submarine Force and the Submarine Industrial Base. Joe's latest op-ed, "Nuclear battle: perhaps not as unthinkable as it once was," about the Russian Navy probably starting to rely more on tactical nuclear weapons, is copyrighted by THE DAY and can be seen for a modest purchase price in the archives of their Web site.

HOLLYWOOD MOVIE PRODUCER RENEWS OPTION TO A JOE BUFF SUBMARINE NOVEL

Joe is very pleased to reveal that the producer who bought a movie option from Joe for one of his "Captain Jeffrey Fuller/USS Challenger" novels in late 2007 has renewed that option for another year. Joe's literary agent John Talbot ably represented Joe throughout these negotiations. Joe is embargoed from revealing more on this topic at this time.

JOE BUFF HAS RETURNED TO WORK FROM A 6-MONTH SABBATICAL, NOW WELL INTO WRITING HIS NEXT NOVEL

Since his most recent novel, SEAS OF CRISIS, 6th book in the "Captain Jeffrey Fuller/USS Challenger" series, came out in hardcover and then paperback from HarperCollins Morrow/Avon in 2006, he's received countless readermails inquiring about his next book. (He answered each of these individually to the degree events allowed.) What has been happening? As Joe wrapped up the galley proofs editing and pre-publication details for SEAS at the end of 2005, his wife Sheila Buff (a bestselling non-fiction health/wellness and nature/hiking author) was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Joe is delighted to inform you that after major surgery, chemo, two types of radiation therapy, and hormone-blocking biotherapy, Sheila is in longterm remission and looks and feels in excellent health. But as you can probably imagine, Sheila's lengthy, stressful, and grueling treatments made it impossible for Joe to get much work done for quite a while. Then, with Sheila back at work and busy as ever, Joe -- a self-employed writer since 1997 -- felt the need for and thus gave himself a well-earned 6-month sabbatical. Now he is delighted to be back riding high in the saddle at his writing desk, having wrapped up 8 book projects plus some 150 shorter non-fiction pieces in the past 12 years.

Among his new writing projects, Joe is hard at work on his next novel. He's embargoed from saying more about it until much closer to the publication date, but it will involve Submariners and Navy SEALs and Seabees, and will tentatively be out in mid-2010. If you liked his 6 previous stories, you'll love this one! Joe will be providing progress reports later this year.

JoeBuff.com site visitors are encouraged to check this NEWS page periodically for updates, and to watch the submarine professional literature for Joe's further incisive, objective, intellectually rigorous undersea warfare strategy/policy commentary.
